Susan Wilkenson, her son, Derek Fair, and his wife, Hayley, opened Creative Keys Music School in 2002 with a goal of providing top-notch music education for the community. Susan grew up playing the piano and has worked with children her whole life, as a preschool director and nanny. She has five grandchildren and loves spending time with them as much as possible. Seeing children connect with music and find joy in learning an instrument is her passion!
Hayley Fair, Director
Hayley started playing piano and flute at age 8 and music quickly became her #1 passion. She was flute section leader in high school and won the Semper Fidelis award from the Marine Corps. While in high school, she started teaching piano lessons and found that she loved introducing children to the joy of music. At USF, she studied flute with Martha Rearick and was a member of the USF Symphony orchestra, while continuing her piano studies with Evelyn Lean. While at college, Hayley began working at a piano store as the studio coordinator and also took over a studio of 25 students. She feels extremely passionate about music education, so much so that she recently initiated a partnership with MusicLink Foundation, which provides scholarships to low-income students to take private music lessons. Hayley works hard to ensure that Creative Keys students receive personalized lessons according to their goals and learning styles while working with talented, experienced instructors.
Derek grew up watching his dad play in bands and then at age 15, his dad got him interested in playing bass guitar. He picked it up quickly and soon joined his dad’s band. Since then, Derek has been a part of many bands in numerous genres, from rock to blues to worship music. In 2001, his band 2nd day broadcast was endorsed by Budweiser and flown to NYC to compete in the CMJ Music Marathon. Their single “Wasted” was in regular rotation on 97X and they performed in The Next Big Thing for two years. Derek is the bass guitarist for Flashback, a dance cover band that performs throughout the Tampa Bay area.
As a homeschooling family of three children, Derek and Hayley understand that parents are looking for the highest quality music education from a school they can trust. We feel honored to serve over 420 students who attend weekly private lessons and look forward to working with your family for many years to come!
